Preview :
Bangladesh Women will face Scotland Women in the inagural game of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on Thursday. The 9th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will get underway from October 3rd. Due to the political turmoil, the event completely shifted to UAE from Bangladesh, while the latter will still be the host. UAE, which always served up as the back-up for the big events has provided Sharjah Cricket Stadium and Dubai International Cricket Stadium to host the marquee event. A total of 10 teams are participating in the event which are divided into two groups of five each. The event will feature 23 matches, including the knockouts. The final will take place on 20th October at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Bangladesh will remain the host for the 9th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, even though the competition moved to UAE due to the political unrest in the country. They are in Group B which involves Scotland Women, England Women, South Africa Women, and West Indies Women. They had a dreadful run this year in T20Is, managing just 2 wins out of 12 matches. Their couple of wins came against Associate nations Thailand Women and Malaysia Women in the recent Women’s Asia Cup.
Their horrific exit in the semi-finals against India in the Asia Cup by 10 wickets, raised eyebrows over the selection call as they brought plenty of changes to the squad for the showpiece event. Ishma Tanjim, Rubya Haider, Shorifa Khatun, Rumana Ahmed, and Sabikun Nahar being dropped, while Disha Biswas, Fahima Khatun, Sobhana Mostary, Shathi Rani and Taj Nehar made it to the 15-member squad.
Scotland secured their first ever qualification for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup by finishing as runners in the global Qualifiers in May this year. Talented all-rounder Kathryn Bryce will lead the side and her sister Sarah Bryce has been appointed as her deputy. Even though they won two matches in the Tri-Series involving Netherlands and PNG a couple of months back, they finished 2nd based on a low net run rate.
Scotland featured in overall 8 T20Is this year, winning 6 of them, with their losses coming against higher-ranked Sri Lanka. Watch out for Kathryn Bryce, Saskia Horley, Abtaha Maqsood, and Rachel Slater who all did well in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier. Familiarity with the UAE conditions keeps them ahead of the opponents.
