Comilla Victorians (COV) and Rangpur Riders (RAN) will play the second game of the Bangladesh Premier League 2023 on Friday (January 6) at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The Victorians are the defending champions. They defeated Fortune Barishal by a mere margin of one run to lift the cup. They will be missing the services of players like Sunil Narine, Faf du Plessis, and Moeen Ali, who played key roles for the team. Litton Das has been appointed the skipper of the side for this season.
The Comilla Victorians were one of the strongest teams in the previous season and ended up lifting the trophy for the 3rd time in its history. However, there have been some changes to the squad since then and only time will tell if they will be able to carry forward their form into this season too. The Victorians have bid adieu to two of their top-scoring batsmen from the last season, Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali. They have also lost Sunil Narine, who played an important role with the bat as well as the ball. Other significant departure includes Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who has joined the Khulna Tigers. However, the team management has brought in plenty of firepowers to cover these losses. Mohammad Rizwan, who has been consistently one of the top-performing batsmen in the T20s, joins the squad, along with other big hitters like Dawid Malan, Khushdil Shah, and Muhammad Nabi. Imrul Kayes and Brandon King will be seen at the top of the order, while Sean Williams brings all his all-round capabilities into the team.
Rangpur Riders, formerly known as the Rangpur Rangers, are back in the league after missing the previous season. In their last appearance, during the 2019-20 season, they finished second-last on the points table. However, with a new name and a fresh squad, the Riders will be hoping for a better outcome this time. The team management has tried to strike a balance between experienced players as well as newcomers and seems to have done well in that department. Led by Nurul Hasan, the team has some well-known faces including Benny Howell, Shoaib Malik, and Pathum Nisaanka. Sikandar Raza, who played extremely well in the most recent T20 World Cup also finds a spot in the squad, along with Mahedi Hasan, Shamim Hossain, Mohammad Nawaz, and Mohammad Naim. The bowling department looks a bit weak when compared to their opponents as the only experienced bowler here is Pakistan seamer Haris Rauf.
