Preview :

England and the Netherlands are all set to face each other in the 40th match of World Cup 2023 on Wednesday, November 8. The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune will host the contest.

England have beaten the Dutch team all six times in ODIs. But when it comes to ICC events, Netherlands have had their share of joy against the Three Lions. In ODI World Cups, England have won all three of their matches. But in the T20 World Cups, Netherlands got the better of their opponents two times in 2009 and 2014. Hence, one would be foolish to rule out the Dutch in the next game.

England have been in absolute shambles in the tournament. Barring their win against Bangladesh at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, the Three Lions have looked hapless, to say the least. On Sunday, November 5, Jos Buttler and Co. became the first team to get knocked out of World Cup 2023. England lost to Australia by 33 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Buttler, in press conferences, have repeatedly said that the Brits have not been able to execute their plans. After the match against the Aussies, Buttler also said that his performances have rubbed off negatively on the team. England have nothing, but pride to play for. The Three Lions will now try and make sure that they avoid the embarrassment of finishing at the bottom of the table. Most importantly, they will look to somehow sneak into the top seven and qualify for the Champions Trophy. From winning the World Cup four years ago under Eoin Morgan’s captaincy to struggling to win even a single match, the England ODI team has seen a decline.

The Netherlands are all but out of the competition. With a net run rate of -1.398, it needs more than a miracle for them to make it through to the next round. Although their hopes of qualifying for the semis are over, they still have a chance to finish in the top seven and qualify for the Champions Trophy to be played two years ago. Max O’Dowd, one of their prolific run-scorers in the last couple of years, has not had the best of times with the bat. His opening partner, Vikramjit Singh has struggled. Scott Edwards and Sybrand Engelbrecht have been impressive, to say the least. Edwards played a crucial role in Netherlands’ win over South Africa at the HPCA Stadium. Engelbrecht, who made his international debut in this World Cup, is their leading run-scorer, having racked up 222 runs at an average of 37. Logan van Beek, Bas de Leede and Colin Ackermann have been excellent as all-rounders. De Leede is also the leading wicket-taker for the Dutch team.
