Preview :
The new edition of the Indian Premier League will kick off as the defending champions Gujarat Titans take on the MS Dhoni-led CSK side on March 31 (Friday). The encounter will take place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Giants have faced each other in 2 matches in the Indian Premier League 2022 (IPL 2022) last year. In both matches, Gujarat Titans defeated Chennai Super Kings. The defending champions will want to continue their winning streak against CSK. However, it will not come easy as CSK has formed a formidable side under the leadership of the veteran Dhoni.
Defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT) proved their mettle in their maiden season in the league last year. Led by Hardik Pandya, GT began their IPL 2022 campaign with a win against fellow rookie franchise Lucknow Super Giants. GT extended their winning run until the IPL 2022 final against Rajasthan Royals and eventually got better of their opponents to bag their first-ever IPL title.
With such an overwhelming show in their maiden IPL season, the expectation for the forthcoming IPL 2023 is already high. GT did well to assemble a good set of players during the IPL 2023 auction, held last year. The Ahmedabad-based franchise managed to seal a deal to get the services of Kane Williamson, Odean Smith, Joshua Little, Mohit Sharma and Shivam Mavi among others to bolster their squad.
On the other side, Chennai Super Kings saw a string of failures in the previous edition of the IPL. It was not only the performance which led the franchise down, but a couple of off-field dramas too played their part in shaping the failure.
The franchise with four IPL titles, couldn’t even manage to enter the playoffs, for the first time in the history of the IPL. CSK finished their flawed IPL 2022 campaign in the penultimate position with an embarrassing four wins from 14 outings.
However, leaving the past aside, CSK will look to mend their campaign and hope for a better outing in the IPL 2023. Ahead of the tournament, they get hold of Ben Stokes, the figure who has been widely anticipated to spearhead CSK after MS Dhoni’s quit. Besides Stokes, Ajinkya Rahane, Kyle Jamieson (ruled out) and Shaik Rasheed were other players who were bought by the yellow franchise in the IPL 2023 auction.
