The pitch at the Newlands Cricket Ground is expected to provide a decent amount of support to the batters in this game. The team that wins the toss will bat first. Meanwhile, in the early overs, the pacers have an advantage on this surface. The spinners will undoubtedly have the upper hand in the middle overs. Overall, it’s a good pitch for hitters. Preview :
MI Cape Town (CT) and Paarl Royals (PRL) will face each other in the first game of the SA20 2023 on Tuesday (January 10) at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. The franchise T20 cricket fever has finally reached South Africa, and they are all set to showcase what they have in their tank. The tournament will not see any Indian player participating; however, the six teams in the league are owned by six different IPL franchise owners. The Cape Town-based franchise is owned by Reliance Industries Limited, which also owns the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL. The owners of Rajasthan Royals own the Paarl Royals team. They also own teams in the Men’s CPL and Women’s CPL.
MI Cape Town is the pre-tournament favorite to win and that is largely because of its bowling lineup. MI Cape Town could potentially have Kagiso Rabada, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Duan Jansen in their lineup! Rabada and Jansen can be lethal with the new ball, Sam Curran is coming into the SA 20 with a 'Player of the tournament' award in the T20 World Cup, and Archer is making his much-await return. There is pace, variety, and world-class experience making it perhaps the best bowling lineup in SA 20 2023. Of course, we did not mention Rashid Khan who is always a force to be reckoned with in this format.
The Paarl Royals are one of the strongest teams in the SA 20 and have put together a very impressive squad as well. David Miller leads the side and he has Jos Buttler, Jason Roy, and Dane Vilas as the core of the batting group. We have seen Miller and Buttler play together for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and it was not the most successful partnership. In South African conditions where the ball is expected to come on nicely to the bat, Roy, Buttler, and Miller could be formidable. We are a bit concerned about the rest of the batting lineup. They have Wihan Lubbe, Dane Vilas, and Mitchell van Buuren but the bulk of the work will have to be done by the overseas players.
Team Guide
Make various team combinations with the help of these information.
Jos Buttler :
Jos Buttler is one of the best T20 batters in the world and has been in good form of late. He scored 225 runs in six matches in the T20 World Cup, averaging 45 at the top of the order. With a T20 strike rate of 145.38. Since moving to the top of the order, he has amassed over 4600 runs at an average of nearly 45 while striking at 150. Buttler has six hundreds and 60 fifties in the format. Buttler stands out as the top pick for this match.
Rassie van der Dussen :
Rassie van der Dussen is one of the most prominent names on the South African domestic circuit. He has a T20I average and a strike rate of 36 and 128.73, respectively. He is an able player against both pace and spin, making him a prime addition to the fantacy team.
David Miller :
David Miller was one of the standout batters last year, impressing for Gujarat Titans and the South African national team. The southpaw has a T20 strike rate of 139.1. The South African batsman has scored 8953 runs with an average close to 37 and a strike rate of around 140. With Miller likely to take up the floater's role in the side, he is a good pick.
Dewald Brewis :
Dewald Brewis is likely to light up the Capetown on Tuesday. The 19-year-old has a strike rate close to 151 and has notched up 820 runs from his 34 matches. Dewald Brevis hit 162 from 57 balls in the CSA T20 Challenge last year and he is one of the players to keep an eye on here.
Liam Livingstone :
Liam Livingstone is the destructive batting all-rounder but he has been out of action since December last year after he sustained a knee injury in his Test debut against Pakistan. The 29-year-old has become an all-format player, but T20 cricket still remains his strong forte. He has made over 5000 runs in T20s at a strike rate of 146.11. Must have pick.
Sam Curran :
Sam Curran has had a whirlwind couple of months, earning a massive IPL contract and winning the Player of the Tournament award in the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup. He has 41 wickets in 35 T20Is at an average of 21.76, holding him in good stead. With Curran likely to bat at No. 6 for MI Cape Town, he is a must-have pick.
Rashid Khan :
Rashid Khan is the prime spin bowler who's also handy with the bat. He is the only overseas skipper in the tournament and is coming here with a lot of match practice. The Afghanistani magician was a part of the Adelaide Strikers’ squad in the ongoing Big Bash League and picked six wickets in eight matches. Rashid has 492 wickets to his name in the shorter format at an excellent economy of 6.37. He has picked four or more wickets on 13 occasions. Good pick.
Kagiso Rabada :
Kagiso Rabada is one of the best bowlers in this format with a T20 average of 22.47. He impressed in the Test series against Australia recently as well, holding him in good stead. Given his wicket-taking prowess in this format, Rabada is a viable captaincy pick in your team.
Jofra Archer :
Jofra Archer is back and he will be hoping to treat everyone with a massive performance here. Archer has played 121 T20s and has picked up 153 wickets with an economy rate of 7.65. He will be the player to watch out for here.
Tabraiz Shamsi :
Tabraiz Shamsi is another proven performer in world cricket with 73 wickets in 59 T20Is. He averages 21.00 with the ball in T20Is and has a good record in South African conditions as well. With Shamsi in good form over the last year or so, he could be a fine pick.
Lungi Ngidi :
Lungi Ngidi will be Paarl Royals’ lead pacer and death overs specialist, giving him plenty of opportunities for wickets. He has 139 wickets from 98 T20s at a strike rate of 13.6. Picked by 27% of the MPL teams, Ngidi can be a good differential pick.
Odean Smith :
Odean Smith has picked 2 wickets in 2 matches along with a controlled economy rate along with his performance on the field that makes him a crucial contributor. Good pick.
Andile Phehlukwayo :
Andile Phehlukwayo was brilliant in his last match that earned him a decent 14 runs along with 3 wickets that should continue to build momentum for his upcoming matches. Punt pick.
