Preview :
The ODI series is locked at 1-1 with just the decider in store. The difference between Pakistan and New Zealand has not been much so far. A brilliant spell of bowling by Naseem Shah in the first match and an outstanding century by Devon Conway in the second match were the deciding factors for their respective teams.
Pakistan's batters struggled in a stiff chase as the pitch continued to slow down. Dew did not have the kind of effect that may have been hoped and so the advantage of chasing in Karachi was nullified. Babar Azam was the only batter that put up a fight. He has ten fifties in his previous eleven ODI's now, an outstanding record that shows just how consistent he is in this format.
The lack of a power hitter in the middle order is hurting the Pakistani team. It was also clear that they struggled to rotate the strike against the spinners. That is not something you expect from a subcontinent team with players that have grown up facing a lot of spin.
Pakistan's bowling effort was pretty good, especially in the second half of the first inning. Mohammad Nawaz made excellent use of the conditions while Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Wasim Jr. made crucial inroads as well.
New Zealand owes its victory to a brilliant performance from Devon Conway. He was able to employ the sweep against the spinners to push them off their lengths and was aggressive against the pacers as well. Both he and Williamson were comfortably the best batters of the match.
The problem has been the other players. As the pitch turned slower and more spin-friendly, none of the other batters (except Santner) were able to adjust and build on the good work done by the top order. With the conditions expected to be much the same for the third ODI, it is difficult to have faith in the New Zealand batting lineup.
After all, Conway and Williamson are not going to carry the team on their shoulders in every match.
New Zealand's bowling in the previous match was exceptional. Their spinners (Santner, Sodhi, and Bracewell) bowled very tight lines and never allowed the Pakistani batters to get away. This is exactly what New Zealand will try to do again.
