Preview :

The 1st T20I match of the West Indies tour of Sri Lanka 2024 will see Sri Lanka (SL) squaring off against West Indies (WI) at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Sunday, October 13.

Sri Lanka had a memorable last few months in ODIs and Tests where they won a series over India and New Zealand. Sanath Jayasuriya, who walked in to fill the void space left by head coach Chris Silverwood temporarily, got extended his contract till 2026 for guiding the team to new heights. He has a big job to do in the shortest format as the side has been struggling since early exit in the ICC T20 World Cup and even lost the subsequent bilateral series against India 3-0. They made tough decisions on picking the squad for the T20I series against West Indies with Dasun Shanaka and Dushmantha Chameera didn’t cut. Following his consistent performances in the franchise leagues, southpaw Bhanuka Rajapaksa made his way back into the squad. The side is well-packed with a heavy spin attack featuring Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Dunith Wellalage. Charith Asalanka will lead the side.

West Indies resurfaced their T20 World Cup exit in the Super 8s with a 3-0 clean sweep over visitors South Africa in August. Men in Maroon are going to miss the majority of their first-choice players Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran, Akeal Hosein, and Shimron Hetmyer, who made themselves unavailable for the Sri Lanka Tour due to personal reasons. The new selection panel led by Head Coach, Daren Sammy has handed a couple of maiden call-ups for all-rounders Terrance Hinds and Shamar Springer, who were impressive in the CPL 2024. Brandon King who was ruled out during the ICC T20 World Cup and early stages of the CPL 2024, is back in the squad after recovering from injury. Top-order batters, Evin Lewis and Andre Fletcher are excited to be part of the troop. Rovman Powell will lead the side with Roston Chase as his deputy. The regulars Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Romario Shepherd, and Fabian Allen have retained their places.

Sri Lanka lost their last T20I series to India by 3-0. They lost the final T20I game to India in the super over. West Indies, on the other hand, won their last T20I series against West Indies by 3-0. They won the last match of the series by 8 wickets. These two teams have played a total of 15 head-to-head test matches. West Indies have won 7 matches, while Sri Lanka have won 8 matches. So, the head-to-head record looks pretty balanced.
