Preview :
The three match ODI series between West Indies and New Zealand comes to an end with the third and final game at the Kensington Oval on Sunday. The series is level at 1-1 after New Zealand won Friday’s rain interrupted game by 50 runs (DLS) Read on as we preview this game. The ODI gets underway at 14:00 local time in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The hosts’ top order were blown away by the experienced and quality bowling from Tim Southee and Trent Boult on Friday. They will need to find an answer to the pair in this game if they want to challenge for the win.
New Zealand showed why they are one of the best international sides around by bouncing back from Wednesday’s win with an immediate victory. The visitors have not only a strong XI but strength in depth in their squad.
West Indies bowled well at the start of the second ODI but could not finish New Zealand off after having it down on the mat. A sticky wicket on which run-scoring was not the easiest meant that the top order had a tough task ahead of it. As things turned out, a collapse to 27 for 6 essentially ended the game before some late-order brilliance from Yannic Cariah and Alzarri Joseph gave the West Indies a glimmer of hope.
The West Indian batting failed in the second match and that has been the story that we are used to seeing for quite some time now. The first ODI was an exception to recent performances and so we are not going to back any of the batters in this match either.
Among the bowlers, Kevin Sinclair and Akeal Hosein were the two that impressed the most. On a wicket that was sometimes a bit tacky, they both managed to get a nice amount of purchase and make life difficult for the New Zealand batters.
New Zealand played without Kane Williamson in the previous match but their batting did not really look much weaker. Finn Allen played a brilliant knock of 96, essentially carrying the entire team on his back. Daryl Mitchell played well for his 41 and Mitch Santner contributed with 26 down the order as well.
The depth in the batting lineup that New Zealand has is quite incredible and it allowed them to recover from a very poor start.
Tim Southee and Trent Boult were deadly with the ball, using the swing on offer and really making life tough for the batters. Michael Bracewell, Mitch Santner, and Glenn Phillips did not get much reward for their efforts and that was a bit surprising. Still, as a bowling unit, the superiority of the New Zealand attack is not in question.
