'There may not have been a Sachin…': Shubman Gill on comparison to Tendulkar, Virat Kohli

 

It's amazing how Indian cricket does it. When the legend Sunil Gavaskar retired, everyone wondered: 'Who's next?' And the very next year, 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar made his debut and went on to become arguably the greatest batsman the world has ever seen. 25 years later, when the time came for the great Tendulkar to pass away, it was Virat Kohli who cemented himself as one of the greatest and most complete modern batsmen of all time. 

In the battle of the Fab 4, Kohli dominated all three formats with an average of over 50 and took world cricket by storm. Today, when Kohli embraces the 'grey', Team India already has his successor ready in the form of Shubman Gill. Gill, just 23, is being touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, and his red-hot form has justified it.

With every big knock, Gill continues to set the stage on fire, inevitably drawing comparisons with Kohli and Tendulkar. For the longest time, Virat vs Sachin dominated the discussion but going forward, from his meteoric rise, the Gill vs Kohli debate is not far away now, with Virender Sehwag, AB de Villiers, Kapil Dev, and the likes. Many more colors of greatness are being seen in the youth. Now, Gill himself has reacted to the comparison, for the first time speaking about Tendulkar and Kohli in the same sentence.

"See it's great when people see it but I don't really see it that way because the generation that all of these people Sachin sir, Virat bhai and Rohit Sharma have inspired is beyond. There may not be a Sachin Tendulkar had we not won the 1983 World Cup... had we not won the 2011 world cup would I be as inspired, maybe or maybe not. So, these kinds of legacies, things kind of things are immortal. you can't really define their legacies," Gill told ANI.
