Zaka Ashraf, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) head, has stepped down.
Zaka Ashraf, head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has resigned, dealing a significant blow to the organization. Ashraf left after chairing a management committee meeting in Lahore on Friday. In June of last year, he succeeded Najam Sethi as chief executive of the PCB. During the committee meeting led by Ashraf, he also thanked PCB members and Patron Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar for their assistance during his brief tenure.
"At the end of the meeting, Mr. Zaka Ashraf announced that he had decided to tender his resignation as chairman and member of the MC to the honorable Patron Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar. In his concluding remarks, Mr Zaka Ashraf thanked the honorable Patron PCB for the confidence and trust reposed by him and extended his best wishes and prayers for the betterment of Pakistan and Pakistan cricket," PCB said in a statement quoting the former chief.
Meanwhile, a report aired by Geo News included Ashraf's remark, revealing why the former chairman resigned.
"I was working for the betterment of cricket, but we can't work in this way," said Ashraf, chief, as quoted by the news organization.
"Now it is up to Prime Minister [Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar], whomever he nominates [will take my place]," he added.
Zaka Ashraf resigned a day after Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn, and Andrew Puttick left their respective roles at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore.
Notably, Pakistan has not won significant championships since Zaka Ashraf's tenure last year. The team failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final and was later eliminated from India's ODI World Cup league rounds.
Babar Azam stepped down as captain following the World Cup catastrophe, and Shan Masood (Test) and Shaheen Afridi (T20I) took over.
Mohammad Hafeez, Pakistan's former captain, has been appointed team director.
