The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has removed the impact player rule from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. Not only this, the rule of 2 bouncers in an over has been continued. BCCI has informed the state units about this on Monday.

Both these rules were applicable in IPL and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The rule of 2 bouncers was introduced last year, while the impact player rule started from 2023. However, both the rules are not being used in international cricket. The upcoming season of the Mushtaq Ali Trophy is starting from 23 November, which will run till 15 December.

The impact player rule was first implemented in 2023.

After the last season of the Indian Premier League, there is a debate going on around the world on the impact player. Many senior cricketers are in support of these rules, while many are opposing them. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said recently that a decision will be taken soon in this regard and information will be given about it.

What is the impact player rule?

Impact Player This rule allows an additional player to be fielded as an impact player as a replacement at any time during the match. That is, the captain can send an impact player to the field in place of any player according to the situation of the match. It was first implemented in IPL-2023.

2 bouncers in an over BCCI allows the use of 2 bouncers in an over in domestic cricket. This rule started with the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament last year. Later it was implemented in IPL-2024. However, there is a rule of one bouncer in an over in international cricket.

Punjab defeated Baroda, the defending champion in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Punjab will enter the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as the defending champion. The team won the title last season by defeating Baroda by 20 runs.

Some senior players of Team India are defending the Impact Player rule, while some are against it.

3 days ago on Wednesday, 28 August, veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin supported the Impact Player rule. On the other hand, after the IPL-2024 season, some players including Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Australian legends Aaron Finch and Ricky Ponting criticized this rule.
