Srikkanth's Call to Arms: Shubman Gill Urged to Carve His Niche Beyond Subcontinent

In a candid commentary, former Indian cricket great Krishnamachari Srikkanth has delivered a noteworthy piece of advice to rising star Shubman Gill. Srikkanth emphasizes the importance of Gill consistently scoring runs abroad to match the expectations surrounding him.

Despite Gill's commendable performances in white-ball cricket for India, his Test records outside the subcontinent have been less stellar. Srikkanth acknowledges the unfairness of comparing anyone to the likes of cricket maestro Virat Kohli but insists that Gill should strive to reach a stature resembling Kohli's and establish himself as a valuable asset.

Srikkanth expressed his views on his YouTube channel, stating, "Shubman Gill has to perform well across the world. Scoring runs in the sub-continent alone doesn't help. He has to score runs overseas. Why are we calling Virat Kohli the King? Look at his record, even in the last year, be it Test matches, ODI, or T20Is."

While cautioning against expecting a Kohli-like performance every time, Srikkanth highlights the need for Gill to work towards achieving a certain stature. He added, "I think the hype around Shubman Gill, quite a few are saying 'he is the next this, next that.' I think we will have to wait and see. I wouldn't overrate him, I wouldn't want to underestimate him."

Commenting on other players, Srikkanth rates KL Rahul's potential to reach 60 to 70 percent of Kohli's class and praises Rishabh Pant as another class player, though unavailable for selection currently.

In the backdrop, Indian captain Rohit Sharma addresses the challenging conditions in South Africa, emphasizing that the team's young batsmen must adapt. As the second Test at Newlands approaches, Sharma anticipates conditions similar to Centurion, stressing the need for the team to cope with South Africa's testing pitches.

The cricket community now eagerly awaits Shubman Gill's response to Srikkanth's call for overseas excellence, adding another layer of anticipation to India's ongoing tour in South Africa.
