Although Rohit and Kohli haven't played for India in the shortest format since November 2022, legendary Indian batsman Vijay Gavaskar supported their selection in the T20 World Cup, which is being held in the USA and the West Indies this year.

With the T20 World Cup slated for later this year, the management of Team India will face a challenging assignment in assembling a formidable roster for the premier format. With legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma agreeing to play T20I cricket, things are sure to get more difficult. According to a recent report by the news agency PTI, both Rohit and Kohli are eager to play for India in the T20 World Cup. Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar recently expressed his opinion on this issue.

In addition to being important hitters for Team India, Rohit and Kohli are also excellent fielders, according to Gavaskar, who supported their selection in the T20 World Cup roster. But their ability to field is what cheers me up. The former captain of India stated, "Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still excellent fielders and will be a big help on the field," on Star Sports.

"Kohli's form has been outstanding in the last 1.5 years. He played unbelievably well in the 2023 World Cup, making 750 runs in three centuries. So there is no doubt about his limited-overs batting," Gavaskar added.

Before revealing the team for the Twenty20 Internationals against Afghanistan, the Indian selectors reportedly want to speak with head coach Rahul Dravid, captain of the Test and ODI teams Rohit Sharma, and captain Virat Kohli. On January 11, at Mohali, India and Afghanistan will begin their three-match Twenty20 International series. The Team India team for the opening two Test matches against England will also need to be decided by the selection committee. The first day of India's five-match Test series against England is set for January 25.

Concurrently, the West Indies and the United States of America will co-host the T20 World Cup this year. The schedule was released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday. India will now be looking to put on a memorable performance this time around since they were unable to win the ODI World Cup on home soil the previous year. The Indian cricket team, paired with bitter rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and the USA in Group A of the T20 World Cup 2024, will play its first three matches in New York City and its final game in Miami.
