Chennai's third consecutive win on home ground: Kolkata defeated by 7 wickets

Defending champion Chennai Super Kings won the third match in the Indian Premier League-2024 (IPL). The team defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 7 wickets in the 22nd match of the current season. CSK has won all its matches at its home ground Chepauk. KKR has suffered its first defeat in the current season. Before this the team had won 3 consecutive matches.

CSK won the toss and chose to bowl first. KKR scored 137 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Tushar Deshpande took 3 wickets each. CSK achieved the target by losing 3 wickets in 17.4 overs. Team captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a fifty. Ravindra Jadeja was adjudged player of the match.

In reply, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad played an unbeaten half-century of 67 runs. He scored his first fifty in the season. Shivam Dubey contributed 28 runs and Rachin Ravindra contributed 15 runs. Vaibhav Arora took 2 wickets. Sunil Narine got one wicket.

Reasons for KKR defeat

• Bad start, lost the first wicket for zero. Kolkata had a bad start. The team lost the wicket of Phil Salt on the first ball of the match. Couldn't even open a salt account.

• After Jadeja's first over was dismissed by Salt, Sunil Narine took over the innings with Angkrish Raghuvanshi for the second wicket by making a partnership of 56 runs on 36 balls, but Ravindra Jadeja sent both of them to the pavilion in the 7th and first over of the innings. And again Kolkata was pushed on the back foot.

• Kolkata lost wickets at regular intervals in the middle overs after Narine was out on the 5th ball of the 7th over. The team got its second blow on 56 runs. After that Kolkata lost 5 wickets in scoring the next 56 runs.

• Iyer's slow batting, even the finishers did not work. Captain Shreyas Iyer stood at one end amid the fall of wickets. He was out on the first ball of the 20th over, but Shreyas batted slowly. He scored 34 runs on 32 balls at a strike rate of 106.25. He could not play big shorts in the last overs. Not only this, power hitters like Russell and Rinku also did not play. Russell was out after scoring 10 runs and Rinku after scoring 9 runs.

• Ramandeep missed the catch. In the run chase, Chennai lost the wicket of Rachin Ravindra by 27 runs. After losing the first wicket for zero, the pair of Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi made a partnership of 56 runs on 36 balls for the second wicket. After the dismissal of this pair, Kolkata lost wickets continuously. There was no major partnership from the team in the middle and lower order.

Gaikwad-Mitchell's fifty partnership

In the reply innings, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad played an important inning of 67 not out. He made important partnerships of 27 runs with Rachin Ravindra, 70 runs with Mitchell and 38 runs with Shivam Dubey.
