Devajit Saikia will become the secretary of BCCI

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) interim secretary Devajit Saikia will be the next secretary of the board. He has filed nomination for the post of secretary. January 4 was the last date for nomination, apart from him no one else filled the nomination form.

By-elections will be held for the post of secretary and treasurer in BCCI on January 12. As there is no other candidate, Saikia will continue to hold the post of secretary. He took over from Jay Shah in December, who has now become the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Prabhtej Bhatia will be the treasurer

Only one nomination was filed for the post of BCCI treasurer. Prabhtej Singh Bhatia filed nomination for this post, so his election unopposed in the by-election is also confirmed. Nominations were to be filed by 5 pm on January 4. Nominations will be scrutinized by January 6, then elections will be held on January 12.

BCCI meeting also on January 12

The BCCI has not yet taken official approval to conduct the by-election. However, the board's special general meeting is on January 12 itself. Former Election Commission Chief AK Jyoti is the electoral officer for the BCCI by-election. She will conduct the election.

Saikia is part of Assam Cricket Association

Devajit Saikia was made the interim secretary of BCCI on December 6 itself. He is a part of Assam Cricket Association. Who replaced Jai Shah. Earlier there were reports that Arun Jaitley's son Rohan Jaitley would become the secretary, but only last month the name of Joint Secretary Saikia came forward.

On the other hand, Bhatia is a part of Chhattisgarh Cricket Association. He will take over the post of treasurer in place of Ashish Shelar. Ashish became a part of the Maharashtra government and as per the rules, ministers of the central and state government cannot become a part of BCCI.

The post of Joint Secretary will be vacant

The post of Joint Secretary will become vacant as soon as Saikia takes over the post of Secretary. The decision on the post of joint secretary will also be taken in the meeting on January 12. Sakia will remain on the post of BCCI secretary till September. After that elections will be held again.

A member can remain on an official post in BCCI for only 3 years, after which he has to serve a cooling off period of 3 years. The 3-year term of the current post of secretary will end in September this year. Before Sakia, Jai Shah was appointed to this post for two and a half years. Sakia will be elected secretary in the by-election on January 12. He can also apply for this post again in September.
