English fast bowler Richard Gleeson replaces Devon Conway in CSK squad for IPL 2024

The Chennai Super Kings have roped in English fast bowler Richard Gleesan as Devon Conway’s replacement who was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Gleesan who made his international debut against India in 2022 will get his maiden opportunity to play in the league. Gleeson’s signing is being considered a tactical move by the franchise as they won’t be able to avail the services of Mustafizur Rahman for the second half of the tournament as he hasn’t been granted NOC to participate further in the multi-team tournament.

Talking about Conway the left-hander was a vital part of CSK’s title-winning campaign last year as he scored 672 runs at an average of 51.69 with a strike rate of 140 in 15 innings

Gleeson on the other hand has been in decent form since making his debut for England in 2022 when he dismissed Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant in the first eight balls that he bowled in a T20I at Edgbaston.

Gleeson can fulfill the role that Mustafizur Rahman or Matheesha Pathirana play for the Chennai Super Kings i.e. coming in as an impact substitute during CSK’s bowling innings and bowling in the death overs to restrict the opposition while bowling first or defending totals when bowling in the second innings.

The stint with CSK presents an opportunity for Gleeson to stake his claim for a spot in England’s 15-member squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in the West Indies and the USA in June this year.
