Gujarat Cricket Association Launches New T20 League
Updated - 28-JUN-2025 13:5 IST

On June 28, 2025, Ahmedabad. As more Indian states embrace franchise-style cricket contests, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) is preparing to introduce its own state-based T20 league in the 2025–2026 season.
GCA secretary Anil Patel confirmed to Cricbuzz that the board has formally chosen to move forward with the proposal, but that important aspects like the tournament window, number of teams, and structure are still being discussed.
Why GCA Start State Leagues?
Founded in places like Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Saurashtra, Delhi, and Maharashtra, these state-level T20 matches have developed into important training grounds for national selectors and the IPL. Beyond conventional domestic competitions, they offer a platform for emerging cricket players to excel.
Why now?
There has been an increase in these matches during the post-IPL period, which is usually late May through July. They give young players access to off-season cricket and give IPL teams scouting chances. Finding suitable spots, broadcast times, and avoiding schedule conflicts are still difficulties, though.
Strategic importance
- Exposure of talent: Although Gujarat has produced elite international cricket players like Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah, many local players are still not well-known.
- Professional development: By providing players with a taste of franchise culture and performance expectations, a GCA-run T20 competition might improve professionalism at the grassroots level.
- Infrastructure and sponsorship: GCA can draw advertisers and broadcasters interested in regional competitions because to its excellent facilities, including as the Sardar Patel and Narendra Modi stadiums.
