The ICC said in its press release that Hasaranga has been banned after receiving a total of five demerit points over 24 months. This also includes his latest breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. "Sri Lanka's T20 International captain and the second-ranked ICC Men's T20 International Player Rankings, Wanindu Hasaranga has been suspended for his latest breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, with his total demerit points reaching five within a 24-month period," the ICC said in a statement. The latter has been suspended for two matches. He has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and three demerit points for the latest breach of the code of conduct.

The incident involving Hasaranga happened at the end of the third and final T20 International on Wednesday when he approached on-field umpire Lyndon Hannibal to criticize the decision of not calling a whole toss ball a no ball. Thus, Hasaranga was found guilty of violating Rule 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct relating to players and player support staff. This rule pertains to personal misconduct by a player, players' support staff, umpire or match referee during an international match. The ICC said Hasaranga had five demerit points, which was reduced to two suspension points.

Afghanistan batsman Gurbaz was also fined for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct in the exact match. He breached Rule 2.4 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to disobeying the umpire's instructions during an international match.

This led to one demerit point being added to Gurbaz's disciplinary record, his second such offence in 24 months, taking his total to two demerit points. The ICC said, 'Despite repeated warnings, Rahmanullah was punished for altering the grip of the bat on the field.' The ICC said both players had admitted their offences and accepted the punishment proposed by Chris Broad, who is part of the elite panel of match referees.

The ICC said, 'These allegations were made by on-field umpires Lyndon Hannibal and Ravindra Wimalasiri, third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and fourth umpire Ranmore Martínez.' Sri Lanka won the series 2–1 despite Afghanistan's close three-run victory in the final T20 International. Hasaranga was named player of the series for his all-round performance.
