In Sri Lanka's opening game of the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, Mendis gives a stunning century to put Sri Lanka on top. In the first innings of the game, the Sri Lanka batsman did a great job of putting Sri Lanka on top.
Additionally, he became the only Sri Lanka batsman to get a century in an ODI World Cup match against Pakistan. The previous record for a Sri Lanka batter was 89, set in Hyderabad at the 1987 World Cup by Roshan Mahanama.
Mendis recorded his third ODI century in just 65 balls, reaching the milestone. Sangakkara's World Cup 2015 knock against England (70 balls) was surpassed by his knock (70 balls).
In fact, this was the sixth-fastest century in ODI World Cup history, after only Aiden Markram's against Sri Lanka in 2023 (49 balls), Kevin O'Brien against England in 2011, Glenn Maxwell against Sri Lanka in 2015 (51 balls), AB de Villiers against the West Indies in 2015 (52 balls), and Eoin Morgan against Afghanistan in 2019 (57 balls).
Mendis has been in excellent form at the current World Cup; in Sri Lanka's opening match against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, he scored 76 runs in just 42 balls.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first to start the game. Mendis and Pathum Nissanka stabilized the innings despite an early setback caused by the dismissal of opener Kusal Perera. Nissanka's impressive half-century served as the ideal counterpoint to Mendis's assertive approach.
