In 2022 itself, Sunil Gavaskar's mother died due to age-related problems. His mother, Meena Gavaskar, was 95 years old. At the time of his mother's death, Gavaskar was commentating on the Test match between India and Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The second match of the five-Test series between India and England started on Friday (February 2) in Visakhapatnam. On the very first day of the match, a mountain of sorrow fell upon the great cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. He was in Visakhapatnam for commentary but had to go to Kanpur. Gavaskar had to leave the commentary midway after the death of his mother-in-law.

Gavaskar flew to Kanpur on Friday afternoon to be with his wife, Marshneil Gavaskar, and his family. Gavaskar is in great demand for commentary during the Indian team's series. During the first Test, the former skipper was part of the host broadcasters' commentary panel in Hyderabad. He resumed his duties with the broadcast team in Visakhapatnam on Friday before learning about his mother-in-law's demise.
