A major challenge has been met in India's preparations for the 2nd Guwahati Test against South Africa, as star opener Shubman Gill is still doubtful due to ongoing fitness issues.

According to reports, Gill, one of India's best Test hitters in recent years, has not fully healed from a sore spot he developed during the most recent home series. The team management is keeping a careful eye on his development as the first test approaches, but there is still a lot of uncertainty.

If Gill Did Not Recover From The Injury

If confirmed, Gill's absence might have a big effect on India's top-order stability. The right-hander has developed into an important pillar over the past year, particularly at No. 3 after India's redesign of red-ball batting positions.

India's plans have relied heavily on his ability to play longer innings, control the new ball, and withstand early pressure. However, India would have to reconsider their squad given that the Test is set to start in Guwahati under difficult early-winter conditions.

Gill Was Injured In The 1st Test

On Day 2 of the first Test, Gill was injured three balls into his innings. Harmer was hit for a four by the India captain's slog, but he seemed to be in immediate pain since he was unable to raise his head freely. As his physiotherapist came to treat him, he held the back of his neck. He left the field a short while later, making it impossible for him to bat during India's second innings. The spasm was confirmed when he went to the hospital. He was seen wearing a cervical collar one day after being released from the hospital.

Gill's role is still up in the doubt, therefore the next 48 hours will be important. As they select their lineups and hope to start the Guwahati Test strong, India will be looking for clarity. The focus is on India's squad management and its backup plans ahead of an important Test series, regardless of Gill's inclusion in the starting lineup.
