IPL 2023: Tomorrow first qualifier between Gujarat-Chennai

After 51 days and 70 matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL), 4 playoff teams have been found. After the end of the league stage, Gujarat Titans (GT) stood first, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) second, Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) third and Mumbai Indians (MI) stood fourth in the points table. Mumbai has reached the playoffs for the 10th time.

Qualifier-1 will be played between GT and CSK on May 23, while the Eliminator match will be played between LSG and MI on May 24. Both the matches will be held at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.

Chennai, captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, reached the playoffs for the 12th time in the 14 seasons played so far. Mumbai is a 5-time champion, finishing in the top-4 for the 10th time. At the same time, defending champions Gujarat and Lucknow reached the playoffs for the second consecutive season after being included for the first time in 2022.

1. Gujarat Titans

2. Chennai Super Kings

 Reached the playoffs for a record 12th time Chennai Super Kings (CSK), captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, finished at number-2 in the points table with 17 points this time. The team won 8 out of 14 matches, lost 5 and played one inconclusive match. Chennai, playing IPL since 2008, reached the playoffs for a record 12th time. In 12 playoffs also, the team reached the finals 9 times and also lifted the trophy 4 times.

3. Lucknow Supergiants

They won 8 out of 14 matches, lost 5 and played one inconclusive. Like Gujarat, the Supergiants, who were included in the IPL for the first time since 2022, also reached the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

4. Mumbai Indians

5-time champion Mumbai Indians, captained by Rohit Sharma, defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first match on Sunday. But the team could qualify in the playoffs because of the match between GT and RCB. Gujarat beat Bengaluru by 6 wickets on Sunday night and restricted them to 14 points. In such a situation, Mumbai remained at number four in the points table with 16 points. They won 8 out of 14 matches and lost 6. Had RCB won the last match, they would have qualified for the playoffs with 16 points and a better run rate, but that did not happen.

Well somehow MI reached the playoffs, but the team is one of the master teams of the playoffs. After finishing top-4 for the first time in 2010, they have now made it to the playoffs for the 10th time, the most after CSK. In 2010, the team lost the final for the first time to CSK.
