Italy Qualifies For ICC T20 World Cup 2026 In Historic First
Updated - 12-JUL-2025 5:48 IST

Italy has reached a significant milestone in its cricket career by earning a spot in the inaugural ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host in February and March of 2026.
Path to Glory
Italy's path to qualification started in June 2024 in Rome at the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier A. Italy advanced to the next round after defeating Romania by a dominant 160 runs, with Joe Burns leading the way with an undefeated 108 off 55 balls.
The Europe Regional Final was held in the Netherlands from July 5–11, 2025. The Netherlands, Scotland, Jersey, Italy, and Guernsey were the five teams that participated. Even after a final-game loss to the Netherlands, Italy secured the coveted second qualifying berth with a stronger net run rate (NRR)—ahead of Jersey—despite placing second in points.
Outstanding Performances
Harry Manenti's five wickets helped Italy shock Scotland with a 12-run victory, keeping them in a strong position in the standings.
Italy defeated the Netherlands by a score of 134/7 in their last game. They managed to hold on until the 17th over, which was sufficient to preserve their net run rate, even though they lost by nine wickets.
Significance and Future Prospects
- Italy is the first country to earn a spot in the ICC World Cup in any format.
- Growth in non-traditional markets: Their accomplishments highlight cricket's increasing international presence in nations that are more familiar with other sports, particularly football.
- Sad on the global stage: Italy, ranked 32nd in T20Is, is making a significant breakthrough by joining a field of 20 teams, including formidable nations like Australia, England, and India.
