Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah can be the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). His claim is considered strong.
The term of the current ICC Chairman Greg Barclay ends on November 30. Barclay said on Tuesday that he does not want a third term.
After this, the discussion of BCCI Secretary Jay Shah becoming the ICC Chairman has intensified. However, no official statement has come from BCCI and Jay Shah regarding this yet.
The ICC said in a statement issued on Tuesday, 'ICC Chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed that he will not be a candidate for a third term and will step down when his current term ends at the end of November.'
August 27 is the last date for nomination of ICC Chairman. The tenure of the ICC Chairman is two years. He can be its chairman for up to three consecutive times. New Zealand's Barclay became the Chairman of the ICC in November 2020. After this, he was re-elected to this post in 2022.
According to the rules of ICC, 16 directors vote in the election of the chairman. In such a situation, it is necessary to get 9 votes to become the chairman. Earlier, a two-thirds majority was required to become the chairman.
Jai Shah's becoming the chairman is being discussed because Shah has one year left in his term as BCCI secretary. According to the BCCI constitution, an official can hold the post for six years before a cooling off period of three years. Overall, a person can hold the post for a total of 18 years, which includes nine years in the state association and nine years in BCCI.
Jai Shah became BCCI secretary in October 2019. After that he was re-elected as BCCI secretary in 2022. According to BCCI rules, after completing the current term in 2025, he will have to go into a cooling off period.
Jay Shah is currently the chairman of ICC's finance and commerce affairs sub-committee. Along with this, he has good relations with most of the 16 voting members.
