Rohit Sharma and his team were playing the World Test Championship final and the BCCI was trying to move forward without a jersey sponsor.

Many of the players who have resumed training in the UK are seen in training clothes, the only new kit featuring the Adidas three stripes and the BCCI logo. BCCI's contract with Byju's for jersey sponsorship came to an end in March after the ed-tech major wanted to walk out of the deal, which was due to run till November due to adverse market conditions.

The BCCI officials were expected to float tenders inviting interested parties for long-term collaboration but did not go ahead with the advertisement due to a lack of favorable responses in online talks. Talks for a short-term collaboration were also on the table, but it was decided not to pursue it further.

In the previous deal, the BCCI was earning ₹1.5 crore per ICC match and ₹4.6 crore per match for bilateral international matches. Although with time, ICC events have grown in importance in the scheme of things, but a few crores for a match is just a drop in the ocean for the cash-rich BCCI. It's a hit they're willing to take.

“It would only be fitting that Indian cricket engages with prestigious and long-term partners rather than going for low-key deals,” a BCCI official said.

With their recent five-year contract with Adidas and a busy ICC calendar now including one white-ball World event every year, the board will hope they find the right partner ahead of the October-November World Cup at home.
