PAK v SA Series 2025: Bavuma Out In Test, de Cock In ODI Squad Against Pakistan
Updated - 23-SEP-2025 5:35 IST

On 22 September, South Africa announced their all-format squard against the upcoming tour of Pakistan in October. Big chance have in the square test championship, captain Temba Bavuma has not been played in the test squad, and Quinton de Kock has returned from retirement to play ODI against Pakistan.
Bavuma ruled out of Pakistan Test series
South Africa test champion captain Temba Bavuma will not play in the two-match Test series in Pakistan beginning on October 12. Due to a grade-two calf strain he suffered during their previous tour of England
He will likely be out for six to eight weeks due to the injury, which will also limit his availability for other forthcoming games.
Aiden Markram has been selected as the Test series captain in his place.
Senuran Muthusamy, Keshav Maharaj (who will only be ready from the second Test, while he recovers from a groin ailment), Simon Harmer (who was brought back after a lengthy layoff), and Prenelan Subrayen will be South Africa's spin options.
Quinton de Kock returns from ODI retirement
South Africa's squads for the upcoming One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against Pakistan include Quinton de Kock, who has retracted his retirement from ODIs. After the 2023 World Cup, he first stopped playing in the 50-over format.
De Kock hasn't participated in T20Is since the 2024 T20 World Cup final. His return indicates that he is ready to play white-ball cricket again.
The team has benefited from de Kock's recall, according to head coach Shukri Conrad. In addition, South Africa is aware of upcoming competitions, including the 2027 World Cup, which it will co-host.
Implications & What to Watch
- The loss of Bavuma leaves the Test team of both leadership and experience; Markram will need to take on new leadership responsibilities, particularly under pressure in Pakistan.
- Given Bavuma's absence and the delays in Maharaj's comeback, the depth of the spin department will be put to the test; Harmer's recall offers some leeway.
- South Africa's white-ball teams now have more batting depth and experience thanks to De Kock's return. Before the 2027 World Cup, his performance in the ODIs and T20Is would probably affect his confidence and selection.
- Keeping de Kock match-fit, Maharaj's fitness, and Bavuma's recovery will all be closely monitored, making injury management essential.
