Pakistan ODI and T20 team coach Gary Kirsten has resigned. There were differences between 56-year-old Kirsten and the Pakistan Cricket Board. At the same time, PCB has appointed Jason Gillespie as the coach of the team in the Australia tour.
PCB issued a statement on Monday saying - 'Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men's cricket team on the limited overs tour of Australia next month. Gary Kirsten had submitted his resignation, which has been accepted.'
Kirsten was made the coach of the Pakistani team 6 months ago in April-2024. At the same time, former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie was made the coach of the Pakistani Test team. Both had signed a 2-year contract. Gary Kirsten won the ODI World Cup for India in 2011 after a long wait of 28 years.
PCB took away selection rights PCB had taken away the selection rights of the team from Kirsten and Gillespie. These rights were with only one selection committee.
No consensus on the name of the captain A day earlier, PCB has made Mohammad Rizwan the new captain of the ODI and T20 team. Kirsten wanted his opinion to be considered. Due to this discussion, the announcement of the team and the new limited overs captain was delayed.
Feeling isolated The coach was feeling isolated due to the increasing influence of the current selection committee. After losing the first Test to England, PCB announced a new selection panel for the third time in three months. It included Aqib, Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Hasan Cheema, while the coach and captain were removed.
After the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, PCB made many changes in its support staff. The team could not qualify for the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023.
Recently, Mickey Arthur, Grant Bradburn and Andrew Puttick also resigned from their posts. Arthur was appointed director of the Pakistan men's cricket team in April 2023. Bradburn was announced as the head coach of the team early last year.
