Legendary England batsman Robin Smith — fondly known as “The Judge” — has died at the age of 62, his family and old county club Hampshire County Cricket Club confirmed on Tuesday. He was found deceased on Monday at his house in South Perth, Australia. No cause has yet been disclosed.
Robin Carrer Highlight
Born in Durban, South Africa, Smith came to England as a teenager and developed as one of the country’s worst batters during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Between 1988 and 1996, he participated in 62 Test matches, scoring 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67, including nine hundreds. His beautiful front-foot square cut — a signature shot — and his courage against some of the game’s strongest fast bowlers made him a fan favourite.
In the shorter format, Smith’s adventures were equally memorable. He appeared in 71 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for England, scoring 2,419 runs. A win to his strength and timing under pressure, his undefeated 167 against Australia at Edgbaston in 1993 served as England's ODI record for 23 years.
ECB Chair Richard Thompson Statement
England Cricket Board chairman Richard Thompson said
"Robin Smith was a player who stood toe to toe with some of the quickest bowlers in the world, meeting spells of hostile fast bowling with a defiant smile and an incredible resilience. He did so in a way that gave England fans enormous pride, and no shortage of entertainment.
"He was a batter ahead of his time which was typified in that unforgettable unbeaten 167 from 163 balls in an ODI against Australia at Edgbaston in 1993.
"His record at Hampshire is exemplary, and he'll be remembered rightly as a great of Hampshire CCC. We're desperately sad to learn of his passing, and the thoughts of all of us in cricket are with his friends, family and loved ones."
