The 2023 Cricketer of the Year candidates were revealed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday, January 4. Both current Australia captain Pat Cummins and former captain of India, Virat Kohli, are on the list. Together, they had a successful 2023. Virat took home the Player of the Tournament award in the ODI World Cup, while Cummins contributed to Australia's victory. Following an incredible year, Travis Head and Ravindra Jadeja have also been shortlisted.
The award is named after former West Indies great player Sir Garfield Sobers.
Virat's Excellent 2023
With 2048 runs in 35 games, the 34-year-old is among the front-runners to win the award for his outstanding 2024. He led India to the finals in the ODI World Cup with a record-breaking 773 runs. Not only did Virat surpass Sachin Tendulkar for the most ODI hundreds, but he also scored nine fifty-plus scores during the tournament.
In the second Test of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Series, he made a crucial 44 against Australia in difficult conditions in Delhi, which enabled India to put up a strong first-inning total and win the match. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, Kohli scored 186 runs in the series finale.
Travis Head, who was selected for the ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year in 2022, outperformed himself in 2023. That year wasn't without difficulties, though, as the Southpaw had to deal with a broken hand that may have prevented him from competing in the World Cup.
The Player made a strong return during the competition and contributed significantly to the World Cup's closing phases. His two 2023 ODI hundreds occurred in the world tournament, and he won Player of the Match for his unique efforts in the semifinal and championship games.
Pat Cummins had an incredible 2023, dominating as a player and taking home multiple honors as captain.
Following their early setback of losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Cummins' Australia rose above the rest and achieved significant victories. It started at The Oval with a decisive win over India in the WTC final, and it ended in England with a valiant Ashes defense. The World Cup concluded with an incredible comeback by the Australians. Australia won nine straight games after dropping the opening two to win the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup for a record sixth time.
