What will happen if the semi-finals are washed out in the rain: The match will be held on the reserve day
The first semi-final of the World Cup is to be held between India and New Zealand on 15 November in Mumbai.
The semi-final line of ODI World Cup 2023 has been decided. India will face New Zealand in the first semi-final on November 15. At the same time, South Africa will face Australia on 16th November
Suppose what happens if the semi-final match is washed out by rain? Then which team will reach the final. Let us know the answers to these questions further.
Reserve day available for knockout matches
ICC has arranged for reserve days for both the semi-finals and final. That is, if the semi-final or final match is not completed in one day, then it will be played again the next day from the same place where it was stopped on the first day.
If reserve day is also washed out then help of points table will be taken.
What will happen if the semi-finals are not completed even on the reserve day? In this situation, that team which is top in the points table will reach the final. That means, if the India-New Zealand semi-final gets washed out due to rain, the Indian team will reach the final. Because India had secured the first position in the points table. At the same time, New Zealand team was at fourth position.
Similarly, if the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia is washed out, then South Africa will reach the final. Because in the points table, South Africa remained at number-2 and Australia at number-3.
Not a single league match was washed out in rain
Not a single league match was washed out in rain in this World Cup. As of 11 November, 44 out of 45 league matches have been played and all results have been announced. Of course, rain had disrupted the match between Pakistan and New Zealand, but in this too the winner was decided according to the Duckworth-Lewis rule.
It was possible to play around 75 overs in the Pakistan-New Zealand match. This match was played in Bengaluru and there is a possibility of rain here in the coming days also. But the knockout matches will be played in Mumbai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Where there is no possibility of rain.
The Pakistan-New Zealand match in Bengaluru was interrupted due to rain but the winner was decided after 75 overs of play was completed.
Provision for superover also exists
There is also a provision of Super Over for the knockout matches of the World Cup. If in the semi-final or final match both the teams score equal runs the match is tied then the winner will be decided by Super Over. If the super over also remains a tie then there will be another super over. The sequence of Super Overs will continue until the winner is found.
If it rains in the final, the trophy will be shared
In the semi-finals, if the match is not decided even on the reserve day, then the winner will be decided on the basis of points table. But this will not happen in the final. The final match will be played in Ahmedabad on 19th November, if it rains on that day then the match will be played on Reserve Day on 20th November. If the result is not achieved even on the reserve day, then the trophy will be shared between both the teams playing the final.
