WPL Season 2 auction today: 165 players will be bid, only 30 slots vacant
The auction for Season 2 of the Women's Premier League (WPL) will be held today i.e. on 9th December in Mumbai. The auction will start at 3:00 pm. 165 players have registered for the auction, of which 104 are Indian and 61 are foreign players. Among the foreigners, 15 players are also from Associate Nations (which have not received Test team status from ICC).
At present only 30 players are vacant in the 5 teams of the league, out of which 9 slots are reserved for foreign players. There is a purse of Rs 17.65 crore among 5 teams, among which champion Mumbai Indians has the least of Rs 2.1 crore. The second season of WPL may start in the third week of February next year. It is likely to end by the second week of March.
Gujarat Giants have the highest purse
There can be a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players in a team. The purse limit of teams in the WPL auction is also only Rs 15 crore, which means a team cannot spend more than Rs 15 crore to buy players.
Before today's auction, the teams also retained the players of Season 1. After which among the 5 teams, Gujarat Giants has the highest purse of Rs 5.95 crore left, from which they have to buy 10 players. UP Warriors have to buy 5 players and Royal Challengers Bangalore have to buy 7 players. UP has a purse of Rs 4 crore and RCB has Rs 3.35 crore left.
Season-1 champion Mumbai Indians has the least amount of Rs 2.1 crore left, from which they have to buy 5 players. Runner-up Delhi Capitals has Rs 2.25 crore left, from which they have to buy only 3 players.
Only 2 players in the base price of 50 lakhs
The base price of WPL auction list players is between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This time the base price of only 2 players is Rs 50 lakh. These include Deandra Dottin of West Indies and Kim Garth of Australia. The base price of 4 players is Rs 40 lakh, these include England's wicketkeeper Amy Jones, South Africa's fast bowler Shabnim Ismail, Australia's Annabel Sutherland and Georgia Wareham.
Sri Lankan captain in base price of 30 lakhs
Sri Lankan captain Chamari Atapattu is among the players with a base price of Rs 30 lakh. She was unsold last season. Last season's unsold players Veda Krishnamurthy, Danny Wyatt, Phoebe Litchfield, Lee Tahuhu and Tammy Beaumont will also remain at the base price of Rs 30 lakh this time.
Players were divided into 21 sets in the auction.
The players included in the final list of the auction are divided according to capped and uncapped. Then they are also kept in different groups of batsmen, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers and spinners. A group of players is called a 'set'. This time the 165 players of the auction have been divided into 21 sets.
Capped batsmen will be auctioned first. Then there will be bidding on capped all-rounders, wicketkeepers, fast bowlers and finally spinners. After this, the bids of uncapped players will also remain in the same sequence.
Which name will be bid first?
A total of 9 players' names are included in Set-1. These include the names of England's Danny Wyatt, Maia Boucher, India's Bharti Fulmali, Veda Krishnamurthy, Mona Mesram, Priya Poonia, Poonam Raut, Australia's Phoebe Litchfield and Naomi Stallenberg. In such a situation, the name of one of these players will come first.
Who will conduct the auction?
BCCI and WPL committee will jointly conduct this auction. Mallika Sagar may be the host of the auction. He had also hosted the previous auction, but no official announcement has been made regarding it yet.
What is the job of an auction host?
When teams bid on a player, the auctioneer announces the player's price as it increases. Finally, when the highest bid is received, the auctioneer sells that player to the team by slamming the hammer on the desk and calling it sold. In this way the auction process is completed.
109 uncapped players out of 165 players
Of the 165 players who registered in the WPL auction, 56 have experience of playing T-20 International. It is expected that more teams will bid for these 56 players.
109 uncapped players have not made their international debut. There will be 61 foreign players in the auction, which also includes 15 players from Associate Nations.
