The BCCI may allow franchises to retain up to 5 players before the mega auction of the Indian Premier League. The board is considering at least 5 retentions by removing the option of Right to Match Card from the auction to be held later this year, so that the brand value of the teams remains intact. However, it is not clear how many of these 5 players can be Indian and how many foreign.
The teams discussed this with the board in a meeting last month. Most of the franchises were demanding to retain 5-6 players. It is being told that the board is going to agree to the franchises. The mega auction of the league can be held later this year.
Mumbai Indians will benefit the most from the permission to retain 5 players from the Indian Board. If this happens, Mumbai Indians will be able to retain core group players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.
Chennai can also retain players like Gaikwad, Jadeja, MS Dhoni. Rajasthan will also have the option to hold overseas players along with big players like Butler, Sanju Samson, Ashwin and Chahal.
According to the retention rules for the auction right now, a team can retain a maximum of 4 players, while one player could be added with the Right to Match (RTM) card. In such a situation, teams get a chance to retain 5 players. Any team is allowed to retain a maximum of 2 foreign players. In 2021, the BCCI allowed franchises to retain a maximum of 4 players.
