The news that seasoned fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will miss the whole of the 2025–26 Ashes series against England was a severe blow to Australia's pace bowling squad.

Why did he rule out?

Hazlewood first walked off while playing for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield during a home game earlier last month. He missed the first two Ashes Tests in Perth and Brisbane due to what appeared to be a hamstring strain, which was later verified by medical scans.

Hazlewood experienced new pain around his heel last week as he tried to recover and gradually resume bowling; this worrying development stopped him from reuniting with the Australian team in Brisbane.

Australia's head coach, Andrew McDonald, announced on Tuesday that the 34-year-old would not play again this summer, citing a "couple of setbacks we didn't see coming."

What does this mean for Australia’s attack?

Australia's bowling balance is upset by Hazlewood's absence, particularly as regular skipper Pat Cummins, another attack leader, was out for the first Test due to a back injury.

As Australia prepares for the third Test in Adelaide on 17 December, the selectors will probably rely on seamers like Scott Boland or Michael Neser to cover for Hazlewood.

Yes, Cummins is expected to make a comeback in the game next week, providing a much-needed lift with his expertise and leadership.

What lies ahead for Hazlewood

While the Ashes are now off the table for Hazlewood this season, Australia’s management has indicated the pacer will redirect his focus to rehabilitation and aim for a comeback ahead of the forthcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, set to begin in February.
