On 28 September, the nail-biting final of the Asia Cup 2025 was played between India and Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. It was the first time both teams had met in the Asia Cup final in 41 years. India beat Pakistan by 5 wickets, sealed their 9th Asia Cup title.
Match Summary
Kuldeep Shine Again, Pakistan's batting collapsed under 150
After losing the toss, Pakistan came to bat. Pakistan had a strong start. Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, the openers, looked strong against the new ball and put on 84 runs for a wicket. Saim Ayub provided impetus with his strong hitting, while Sahibzada steadied the innings with a calm knock.
In the 13th over, Pakistan reached the 100-run milestone, but in the middle overs, India's spinners, under the leadership of Kuldeep Yadav, put a stop to it. Salman Agha, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Saim Ayub were all quickly removed by Kuldeep, leaving Pakistan to struggle for reconstruction. Pakistan had some hope after Sahibzada's fifty of 57 runs, but wickets continued to fall at crucial times.
Pakistan was all out at 146 as Bumrah, Varun, and Axar claimed 2-2 wickets. Kuldeep (4/30) was an exceptional bowler for India.
Tilak and Dube's explosive innings, India chase down the target in 19.4 overs
India needed a solid start as they chased 147, but Faheem Ashraf's quick inswinger got rid of Abhishek Sharma(5) and Shubman Gill(12). Afridi throws out Suryakumar Yadav(1). In just 20 runs, India lost their top order. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma, who made 50 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket, maintained the innings. India remained ahead of the required rate due to Samson's timing and Tilak Varma's signature drives.
Ahmed's removal of Sanju Samson marked a turning point. During his brief 33-run cameo, Shivam Dube changed the pace by hitting boundaries whenever he wanted. India maintained their cool during the chase even after Sanju was dismissed for a well-made 24.
Faheem Ashraf's disciplined spell of 3 wickets helped Pakistan battle back, but Tilak Varma and the rest of India's lower middle order kept the scoreboard moving. Rinku Singh ultimately maintained calm, scoring the game-winning runs in the last over.
Abhishek Sharma became Player of the Tournment, and Tilak Verma became Player of the Match.
India Refuses to Accept the Asia Cup Trophy from Mohsin Naqvi
While the main topic of conversation that evening should have been India's win in the Asia Cup 2025 final, the controversy surrounding Mohsin Naqvi's trophy handover provided an unexpected twist.
India beat Pakistan to win the Asia Cup for the ninth time in history, and the match ended with dramatic events on and off the field. However, there was controversy surrounding the post-match ceremony because it was reported that the Indian players originally refused to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Yet, Indian captain Surya Kumar Yadav appeared hesitant to remove the trophy from Naqvi's hands, according to sources. Instead, Surya pointed to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) official, which caused a long wait before the issue was settled. With the help of ACC officials, the trophy was eventually presented, and the Indian team celebrated.
