AUS v IND 2025: Iyer Out, Due To A Laceration To The Spleen
Updated - 28-OCT-2025 5:57 IST

Shreyas Iyer, the vice captain of India, is recovering in Sydney after a severe injury he sustained during the third One Day International (ODI) against the Australian national cricket team.
What Happened
On October 25, 2025, during the ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Iyer ran back to dismiss Alex Carey with a diving catch. He clutched his left side and showed signs of agony right after the catch, indicating that he needed medical assistance.
Iyer had a laceration (tear) to his spleen, which is a dangerous injury considering the organ's susceptibility and the possibility of internal bleeding, according to preliminary scans.
Medical Status
Iyer gets treatment and is "medically stable, and recovering well," according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
He was once taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because of a decline in vital signs and worries about internal bleeding.
He has already been discharged from the intensive care unit and is still in the hospital in Sydney, where medical personnel and the Indian team physician will continue to monitor his condition.
Impact on cricketing commitments
There is currently no set date for his return. The BCCI has stated that they will assess Iyer daily and won't rush him back.
India's middle-order hitting is greatly impacted by his absence. Iyer has been an essential part of India's ODI system; thus, the squad will need to modify its batting approach if he is absent, even for a few games.
Series Overview
India lost the three-match series 2-1 after losing the first two games in Perth and Adelaide, but they won the third ODI by nine wickets. The ODI series, the five-match Twenty20 International series, will take place. The first Twenty20 International will take place in Canberra on October 29.
