Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has been suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on disciplinary grounds. He has been suspended for 48 hours and will be dismissed immediately after this period.
The board has also issued a show cause notice to him. At the same time, the board has appointed Phil Simmons as interim coach till the Champions Trophy 2025.
This decision of the Bangladesh Board has come at a time when the team had to lose both the T20 and Test series on the tour of India. Bangladesh came to India after defeating Pakistan in a two-match Test series at its home. In India, Bangladesh first lost the Test series 2-0 and then the T20 series 3-0.
Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Chandika Hathurusingha was appointed Bangladesh coach in February last year. His tenure was till the 2025 Champions Trophy. Under the leadership of 56-year-old Chandika Hathurusingha, Bangladesh performed very poorly during last year's ODI World Cup and this year's T20 World Cup. Hathurusinghe's best achievement was that the Bangladesh team won the Test series 2-0 against Pakistan this year.
Former West Indies batting-all-rounder Simmons has recently coached his West Indies team. Prior to this, he was the head coach of Zimbabwe from 2004-2005, Ireland from 2007-2015, West Indies from 2015-2016, Afghanistan from 2017-2019 and West Indies from 2019-2022. Simmons played 26 Tests and 143 ODIs in his international career. He scored 1,002 runs in his Test career. He scored 3,675 runs in ODIs.
