The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) formally brought up the unresolved issue of the Asia Cup 2025 winners' trophy at the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting in Dubai.

India won the continental title after defeating the Pakistani national cricket team in the Asia Cup final on September 28.

Nevertheless, the trophy has not yet been given to the winners. Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is still in possession of the trophy.

The Issue

When the Indian players refused to take the trophy from Naqvi at the trophy-presentation ceremony, emotions increased. They mentioned the political tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as the conflict of interest given his dual role.

The award was reportedly taken off the presentation stage and kept under Naqvi's supervision at the ACC office in Dubai after that rejection.

Before the ICC meeting, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that India had sent an official letter to the ACC asking for the trophy to be given, but had not heard back.

He brought up the issue at the ICC Board meeting, emphasizing that India's victory was clear and that they should get the trophy.

ICC’s Response

The Board agreed to consider the issue informally even though it was not on the official agenda. Several members voiced their worries that eliminating a winner's trophy would be detrimental to cricket's administration and culture.

Sources claim that the ICC has now formed a committee to mediate a dispute between India, the ACC, and Pakistan. The committee is purportedly led by Pankaj Khimji of the Oman Cricket Board.

Why It Matters

This is not just a symbolic rejection. For India, the trophy is an actual proof of a significant tournament victory; for international administrators, the event calls into question sport-administration procedures, justice, and the necessity of shielding cricket from international politics. Such disputes could affect future matches, board relations, and the sport's reputation if they are not settled.

What Next

The final decision now rests on the efforts of the mediation committee and whether Naqvi, as president of the ACC, consents to transfer the trophy. The BCCI has stated clearly that it will not accept the award from him.

The ideal outcome would be a respectful handover and the resolution of the dispute, but the ICC will likely keep an eye on things and may set deadlines or make recommendations.
