Pakistan was penalized for playing at a slow over-rate against New Zealand in Karachi during the opening game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After Pakistan proved to be one over below the required rate, taking time allowances with it, the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a penalty equal to 5% of the players' match costs. In that match New Zealand beat Pakistan by 60 runs.

Who Made The Charge?

Third umpire Joel Wilson, fourth umpire Alex Wharf, and on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula were the ones that made the charge. Andy Pycroft, the match referee, applied the penalty. A formal hearing was not necessary because Mohammad Rizwan, the captain of Pakistan, agreed to the violation.

ICC Rules On Over-Rate

Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel states that if a team does bowl within the allotted period, players will be punished five percent of their match fee for each over.

It's important to maintain the necessary over-rate because slow over-rates might hinder play and put the other team at a disadvantage. By ensuring that teams follow the set times, the ICC's strict rules seek to maintain the integrity of the sport while promoting fairness.
