England gained once more when Sarfaraz Khan (22) and Karun Nair (31) started but failed to convert. Gill took control when India appeared weak at 211/5. He balanced caution with graceful strokeplay to anchor the innings with a cool 114 not out off 199 balls, demonstrating maturity and patience.
Gill joins Jadeja, make an important partnership of 99
He was joined by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was undefeated at 41. The English bowlers were frustrated in the last session as they pieced together an unbroken 99-run stand for the sixth wicket. Their stand turned the tide of the match in India's favor by helping them surpass the 300-run threshold.
