With a fluid 65, Zak Crawley offered strong support and contributed to the creation of an opening stand that changed the game. Joe Root maintained composure under duress, adding a crucial 53 not out to Jamie Smith's undefeated 44 to form a commanding 71-run partnership. With a self-assured six to seal the victory, Jamie Smith guided England to their second-highest chase at Headingley in just 82 overs.

Indian bowlers struggled to take wickets

India put up an excellent fight in the middle session. Prasidh Krishna raised hopes for a comeback early on by taking two quick wickets (Crawley and Pope).

India briefly gained momentum after Shardul Thakur's remarkable a fit, which saw him send Duckett (149) and Brook (duck) with two wickets in two balls.

But Root and Smith recovered and eventually ended the chase as India was unable to maintain the pressure.

After this win over India, England has led the 5 test matches series by 1-0. India's Poor fielding covered their top order's outstanding batting; missed catches early in the chase proved costly. The next England v India 2nd test match is on 2 July in Birmingham.
