He was joined by Harry Brook, who scored a cool 158. Together, they put up an incredible 303-run sixth-wicket partnership, which is England's second-highest ever for that wicket.
England reached 407 all out, just under 90 overs, thanks to their partnership, even though six of their players made ducks.
India’s Response & Bowling Excellence
India reacted with vigor. The standout player, Mohammed Siraj, took 6/70, including crucial wickets of Root, Stokes, and every tailender.
Also impressive was debutant Akash Deep, who took 4/88 and ended the Smith–Brook collaboration after it had reached about 300.

In their second innings, India was 64/1 by stumps, with a commanding 244-run advantage.
While Karun Nair (7*) and KL Rahul (28*) made sure there was no further damage, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early for 28.
