Few hours ago, South African wicket keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen announced retirement from international cricket. And now A great 13-year career in One Day Internationals (ODIs) has come to an end with Australian cricket player Glenn Maxwell's official retirement.
The 36-year-old all-rounder made his announcement on June 2, 2025, stating that he wanted to concentrate on T20 cricket, including Australia's 2026 T20 World Cup campaign, due to the physical demands of the 50-over game.
Maxwell ODI Career
During his 149-match ODI career, Maxwell amassed 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and a remarkable rate of 126.7, which was the second-highest total among players with over 2,000 runs in ODI history. His top score was an undefeated 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, which is generally considered to be one of the best ODI innings. He amassed four hundreds and twenty-three half-centuries.
Maxwell's skill to bat was matched by his ability to use the ball, as he took 77 wickets with his off-spin. He was an essential member of the Australian side because of his dynamic fielding and capacity to change the outcome of a game. He made a lasting impression on Australia's white-ball success by playing a key role in their World Cup wins in 2015 and 2023.
Why Did He Retire From ODI Cricket?
After suffering a serious leg injury in 2022, Maxwell's decision to retire from ODIs was impacted by the physical toll the format has had on him. Worried about his poor fielding skills, he said he thought it was time to retire so that up-and-coming players could get ready for the 2027 World Cup.
Maxwell will continue play T20I cricket
Maxwell is still dedicated to T20 cricket after leaving ODIs, and he is expected to be a key member of Australia's 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. He is still well-known in franchise leagues, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has stated that he wants to play "until I can't walk anymore."
