The thundering first match between the current champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Kolkata's famed Eden Gardens is scheduled for March 22 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). The awaited match could be delayed by heavy rainfall, which has cricket fans and organizers in fear.

Due to the high likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rain on match day, weather reports have issued an orange signal for Kolkata and the surrounding areas. These unfavorable weather conditions are predicted to last from Thursday through Sunday, with the worst weather likely during the weekend, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). 

On March 22, there is a 74% chance of rain during the day and a 90% chance in the evening, according to AccuWeather. This raises questions about potential delays to the match itself as well as the opening ceremony. 

IPL Rules On Case Of Rain

According to IPL rules, referees may reduce the game by reducing the number of overs in cases of weather delays. However, a match has to include at least five overs each side. The game would be called off and both teams would split the point if the weather continued even with this shortened format. Unexpectedly, there are no reserve days for IPL group stage matches, so any washout final could have an effect on the league standings.
