IPL 2025 New Rule: IPL Allow Extra Time For Matches By 1 hour
Updated - 21-MAY-2025 5:55 IST

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a major change to the playing rules of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season by allowing all matches to play for an additional hour. It started from May 20, 2025, beginning with the match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, all IPL games, including league and playoff matches, will now have an extra 120 minutes to allow for weather-related delays.
Understand Extra Time Rule
In previous years, playoff games were given a 120-minute cushion to handle unanticipated delays, while IPL league matches were given a 60-minute buffer. The updated regulation permits a two-hour extension past the planned end time and defines the extra time for all games. The purpose of this modification is to guarantee that complete 20-over matches may be played in spite of weather-related delays, especially during the monsoon season.
Why This Decision Taken?
The 48th match of IPL 2025 played between RCB vs KKR at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was washed out due to heavy rain and bad weather. Result: KKR eliminated from the IPL 2025. This decreased the fans' excitement for the game, and also both teams have a chance to win the game if there could be at least 10 overs possible.
Value to Match Scheduling
The increased extra time allows evening games to start as late as 9:30 PM and afternoon matches to start as late as 5:30 PM. This adaptability is essential for allowing for delays and increasing the probability of finishing games the same day.
Franchise Responses
Franchises have responded to the BCCI's decision in different ways, given the fact that it attempts to lessen the effect of bad weather on the competition. For example, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) voiced disagreement with the mid-season rule change, claiming that it might impact the competitive balance and put teams at a disadvantage that had previously faced match washouts under the prior regulations.
RCB vs SRH 65th Match Will Played in Lucknow
Due to rain and bad weather RCB vs SRH match 65th match of IPL 2025 will be played in Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on May 23rd. Before this match was scheduled to be played in Bengaluru, but the weather condition of Bangalore is bad with a high chance of heavy rain.
