Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to select Dasun Shanaka as captain for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, taking Charith Asalanka's place. This marks a significant shift in leadership ahead of the global tournament.

Leadership Change Ahead of T20 World Cup

Charith Asalanka, who took the T20I captaincy during Sri Lanka's transition period, has received praise for his strategic understanding and composed attitude.

However, selectors are revisiting their alternatives due to inconsistent performance and the need for seasoned leadership in high-pressure situations. SLC has returned to Shanaka because the T20 World Cup requires showing leadership and tactical innovation.

Why Dasun Shanaka?

In T20 cricket, Dasun Shanaka has a solid track record and a wealth of expertise. In the past, he led Sri Lanka in a number of ICC matches, including the 2022 T20 World Cup, where the country advanced to the Super 12 round.

In 2022, Shanaka also guided the team to an Asia Cup victory, an important win that enhanced his status as a big-tournament leader.
