Mohit Sharma, an Indian fast bowler known for his slick variations and cool manner under duress, has formally declared his retirement from all cricket formats, ending a career filled with tenacity, comebacks, and standout performances.
Mohit came into the spotlight during the early 2010s, when his outstanding domestic achievements for Haryana secured him a position in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) setup.
Under the supervision of MS Dhoni, Mohit polished his white-ball skills, especially his change-ups, slower deliveries, and stump-to-stump precision. Mohit's stellar IPL performance quickly led to his selection for India, where he made his ODI debut in 2013.
Rise to Prominence
Mohit’s highest point came during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, where he played a significant role in India’s pace attack alongside Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav. His disciplined bowling in the middle overs helped India reach the semifinals, and his ability to regularly hit the appropriate lengths gave him a reliable option for the squad. Mohit, one of India's best players, finished the match with 13 wickets.
Challenges and Comebacks
With his skill, injuries, and fierce competition for pace-bowling positions limited Mohit's international career was limited. He left the national setup after 2016, but his resolve never failed. He kept up his hard work in both domestic and IPL cricket, receiving praise for his leadership in bowling units, professionalism, and fitness.
Many young Indian bowlers were motivated by his comeback story with the Gujarat Titans, when he became one of the season's top wicket-takers in 2023. He even won a recall to India’s T20I squad in 2024, showing his continuing significance.
