NZ v WI 2025: Blundell Ruled Out 2nd Test, Hay Will Play Maiden Test
Updated - 9-DEC-2025 5:53 IST

New Zealand’s regular wicketkeeper, Tom Blundell, has been ruled out due to a hamstring tear sustained on the first day of the first Test in Christchurch. He will not play in the upcoming second Test against the West Indies cricket team.
In his place, 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay has been drafted into the squad and is poised to make his Test debut at the historic Basin Reserve in Wellington on December 10.
Why this matters for New Zealand
Despite losing their starting keeper, the Blackcaps' bowling attack has also been severely damaged. All-rounder Mitchell Santner and important pacers Matt Henry and Nathan Smith have already been ruled out for the rest of the series.
To replace the holes, the team will now rely on uncapped or newcomers like Hay (for keeping) and recent additions to the bowling unit like Michael Rae and Kristian Clarke.
Given the level of injuries across departments, New Zealand's depth and toughness will be put to the test in the second Test and maybe the series.
Mitchell Hay: chance knocks
Mitchell Hay, who has only been selected in limited-overs forms up to this point, has a solid first-class record with his home team, making him an interesting candidate for the gloves.
Rob Walter, the head coach, was upbeat about the young player's fitness. He noted Hay's attitude and consistency at home, calling the call-up "a great moment in his career" and a well-earned chance.
For Hay, it's the opportunity to play red-ball cricket in white, a move to Test level that many aspirants aim for.
