Long known as the Pataudi Trophy, the historic India tour of England Test series 2025 trophy was formally retired in June 2025 and replaced with the recently named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. It is named after two modern Cricket greats: India's batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and England's all-time leading fast bowler James Anderson. It brings in a new era in this legendary rivalry.

The retirement of a trophy that honored the memory of Mansoor Ali Khan "Tiger" Pataudi and his father still created controversy among cricket circles. All-time great Kapil Dev of India called the action "strange" and "surprising."

Sachin Tendulkar's Statement On This Renaming Of The Trophy

Tendulkar stated that he called the Pataudi family right away after hearing the board's decision. He told The Indian Express that “My first call was to the family—to inform them and discuss how the legacy could be preserved”.

Tendulkar highlighted, “The Pataudi legacy has to be kept alive. Their contribution to Indian cricket inspires us all”, which highlights the significance of recognizing the contemporary legends while also paying tribute to their efforts.

A New Era Honouring the Past

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has a lot of symbolic meaning. With 704 wickets in 188 games and 15,921 runs in 200 Tests, respectively, Anderson and Tendulkar are the most capped fast bowlers and batsmen in Test cricket, making them appropriate statistics to represent the sport's traditional format.
