Why Jasprit Bumrah Did Not Take India Test Captaincy?
Updated - 18-JUN-2025 6:3 IST

India’s fast and one of the best bowlers in India as well as the world, Jasprit Bumrah. Why has he not been made the India test captain in the upcoming India tour of England 2025 or the India test captain?
Many thought Bumrah would be an obvious choice for the leadership position after he proved himself to be one of the top fast bowlers in the world and led India to a historic victory in the 2022 Edgbaston Test.
Shubman Gill will lead India in the 5-match Test series against England in 2025. Begins from June 20. After Rohit Sharma retired from the Indian Test captaincy, Virat Kohli retired in May 2025.
There are many reasons of Bumrah is not considered the test captain of India.
Reason Behind Not Concerned Bumrah
Workload Management
Ajit Agarkar, chief selector, stated that it was unclear if Bumrah would be available for all five Test matches. Rather than overloading Bumrah with captaincy responsibilities, he underlined the importance of maintaining his fitness.
Ajit stated: “He’s more important to us as a player… we’d rather have him bowling as well as he does, than putting that extra burden on him.”
Injury Risk
Bumrah's past back issues are a major concern. Experts like Ravi Shastri said that he might not be able to continue playing bowling as long as he takes on the role of captain. Former pacer Shane Bond suggested limiting Bumrah to two Test matches in a row in England in order to prevent the same thing from happening again.
Personal Decision to Decline
Latest reports state that Bumrah himself chose to go, putting his bowling role and long-term performance ahead of captaincy. According to reports, he explained to selectors why he quit by saying he "won’t be able to play" the workload of captaincy for an entire series.
Preference for Long-Term Batter Leaders
The development of a long-term leadership crop among batsmen seems to be the main goal of India's plan. Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill were thought to be more environmentally friendly options. The 25-year-old Gill offers maturity from his time as an IPL captain and his previous experience as a white-ball vice-captain. Pant also became a strong candidate for the position of vice captain.
