Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has said that if Rohit Sharma is not available in the initial matches of the Border-Gavaskar, then the selectors should change the captain. Gavaskar said these things in India Today's Sports Tak program.
The 75-year-old former opener argued that the captain's presence in the opening Test of a foreign series is most important. Especially when Team India had to face a shameful clean sweep in the home series against New Zealand last week.

Gavaskar said-
The captain should play the first Test. If he is injured, then it is a different matter, but if a captain is not available in the first Test match of the series, then it puts a lot of pressure on the vice-captain and it is not easy. Team India has to play a 5-Test Test series against Australia from November 22. The first match of the series will be in Perth.
Gavaskar full statement
We are seeing reports that Rohit will not play the first Test and we do not know about his availability for the second Test yet. I think Agarkar should tell him now. You can do whatever you want, you can rest if you want or there is a personal reason, but on this tour you can only play as a batsman. You can join the Indian team whenever you want, but we are making the vice-captain the captain for this tour. There was a clarity in the 2021-22 tour. We knew that Kohli would play only one Test match and after that the vice-captain would take over, which made it easier for the rest of the players to accept this fact. This time it is not so.
Rohit playing in the first 2 Tests is not certain
Rohit Sharma is not certain to play in the first 2 Tests of the Australia tour. He himself had said this. In response to a question during the Test series against the Kiwis, Rohit had said - 'Right now I am not sure whether I will go or not, but let's see what happens.'
Indian captain is going to become a father
Actually, Indian captain Rohit Sharma is going to become a father. Abhinav Mukund confirmed this on Sunday. He said that Rohit Sharma's wife Ritika Sajdeh is pregnant and is going to give birth to her second child.
Ritika Sajdeh is going to become a mother for the second time. She became a mother for the first time on 30 December 2018. Ritika and Rohit have named their daughter Samaira.
The series is important in terms of WTC, it is necessary to win 4-0
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is very important for the Indian team in terms of the current cycle of the World Test Championship. Team India will have to win this series 4-0 to reach the final on its own. Currently, the Indian team is in second place in the WTC points table.
